New Zealand vs Rest of the World

An unlikely band of NZ-born tonkers took on Rest of the World.

It was a closer one, but team New Zealand took out the honours, with some solid batting and impressive tight bowling.

Match report Boxing Day ‘17 New Zealand vs. Rest of World origin.

Boxing Day started with the sound of heavy rain, followed by an extraordinarily high number of message notifications.

MetService reported record numbers of search hits for the 0624 area.

Thankfully we were treated to a lovely afternoon and play was able to commence and continue as planned, with an impromptu Tonk D&L system.

Harry (ROW) won the toss and elected to bowl.

The NZ team batted well with 4 of the 5 first carrying their bat and scoring at 10 runs per over at the mid-innings drinks break. Narly and Scott both got to the maximum of 30. With the foundation set the 2nd half of the order played with freedom, navigating Harry’s 0-4 from 2 and took the total to 176.

In reply, with a bit of extra moisture in the wicket ROW started slow and suffered a few early setbacks. Steve then got his eye in and started clearing the boundary with Tige also contributing, making the most of his life while on 0.

At the drinks break ROW had wickets in hand but need to accelerate the scoring rate. As is tradition for any South African playing in a cricket match of importance Harry took one for the rainbow nation and was run out by substitute fielder Greg of Tosser / West Devonport origin. Robin, Karl and Andrew threw the willow at the ball and ended up needing 40+ from the last over. They ended up scoring a credible 17 and finishing on 149.

After the post match photos, the kids of NZ then put on a great rendition of Ka Mate.

Rest of world then showed their collective strength / class and comprehensively smashed New Zealand in the traditional post match boat race. It’s a good thing Glen Marsh was away this year as it may of turned into a first to five competition...

Player of the day went to Richard (NZ) and Tige (ROW), with special mention to Matt’s son Broadie for some excellent work at 3rd man.

Thanks to everyone involved and the volunteers for equipment including catering. It’s a great community we have and at some point in time we all came here on a waka.

See you next year.
